Agriscience education is intended
to enhance the image of agriculture by portraying to students that agriculture includes
many careers that are not solely agricultural production or business-oriented. Such
careers require a strong background in the biological and physical sciences - fiber
technologist, water resource manager, plant geneticist, biochemist, etc.
Agriscience programs
helps students gain skills through:
- practical application of scientific
principles learned in the classroom
- cooperative research with teachers,
professors or industry personnel
- utilization of media, computers, networks,
and emerging technologies
- use of effective time management and
planning skills
- interaction with people of diverse ethnic,
racial, social and cultural backgrounds
- career exploration
- recognition and scholarship opportunities

The National FFA Organization currently manages three programs that
focus on agriscience education:

Agriscience Student Scholarship and Recognition
Program

exceptional accomplishments in the investigation of a problem through their classroom
agriscience studies, supervised
agricultural experience program (SAE) and FFA activities. Students prepare a
scientific paper and make an oral presentation on their research.

Student Application can be uploaded from the National FFA Website.

Agriscience Teacher of the Year Award Program
Designed to recognize teachers who integrate applied
science into their curriculum through innovative approaches, which excites their students
and involves them in hands-on activities. Student instruction includes areas such as
aquaculture, biotechnology, food science, physical science, plant science and animal
science. The teachers who have been selected as state and national winners have provided
model examples of successful agriculture programs and FFA chapters. These teachers
have extended learning beyond the classroom door. The impact made by these advisors will
continue to influence the direction of agriculture education well into the next century.
